Wayne Cao was first elected to the Alberta Legislature in 1997, re-elected twice in 2001 and 2004. He has served on a number of Legislature and Government committees, including Public Accounts, Alberta’s Role in Canadian Confederation, Learning & Human Resources. He chaired the Employment Standards Regulation Review, the Court Service Workers Review, the Child Care Legislation Review. He introduced a number of legislation changes to improve Albertans’ quality of life, such as parental leaves, assistance for vulnerable and low income Albertans, the Alberta’s official song, the naming of Veterans Highway and promoting Canadian history learning. His focus is on Albertan youth and Seniors, quality of live of Albertans in general.
In 2005, he was appointed by Premier Klein as the Chair of Calgary Government MLA Caucus and the Cabinet Liaison for Southern Alberta. Since December 2006, Premier Ed Stelmach has appointed him Chairman of Cabinet Policy Committee on Government Services, sitting in Cabinet meetings.
Prior to becoming an MLA, Wayne worked as an IT Professional, in supervisory and management roles, for Shell petroleum corporation for over 25 years. He studied engineering and computing science at the Saigon University, Auckland University and Waterloo University. He taught computer science courses in Saigon and at SAIT.
Wayne has been involved extensively in the community, receiving several awards and memberships from the Canadian Club, United Nations Club, Lions Club, Canadian Legion, Calgary Minor Soccer Association, For the Love of Children Society, and a number of cultural and charity organizations. He is holder of Queen’s Jubilee Medal and Alberta Centennial Medal.
Wayne and his wife, Kim, have three adult sons who are lawyer, engineer and research scientist.
